Cardiff City fixtures 2013-14: Stats show Bluebirds are masters of opening day success
19 Jun 2013 09:00
As Cardiff City's Premier League fixtures for the 2013/14 season are unveiled, we look at how the Bluebirds have lost only three opening day fixtures in the past 20 years

Kenny Miller scored the winner on the opening day against West Ham in 2011
Rarely, if ever, has a fixtures announcement been so eagerly anticipated by Cardiff City fans.

Today, Bluebirds supporters finally found out the name of the team they will face first on their return to the big time.

While West Ham United may not have been the most mouth-watering fixture the Bluebirds could have been given, August 17 cannot come soon enough as Malky Mackay's men bid to find out if they can mix it with the Premier League's finest after more than 50 years outside the top flight.

WalesOnline has taken a quick glance at the archives, and the stats offer great encouragement ahead of the trip to Upton Park.

The Bluebirds have only lost three times on the opening day of the season during the past 20 years and have recorded victories in the past two years against West Ham and Huddersfield.

They have a 50% win rate in the first match of the season during the past two decades and have been particularly impressive in recent years.

Take a look at the facts, figures and results from 20 years of opening day matches below.

A brief glance at some of the opposition, particularly during the nineties, shows just how far Cardiff have come.

The days of trips to Scarborough, Stockport and Leyton Orient are over. Bring on Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool...The Bluebirds have arrived.

Anyone expecting a quick decision on the television games will be disappointed.

BT Sport - who have 18 first-pick Premier League games - have just tweeted the following:

"BT Sport will go through a match selection process which will take about two weeks, at which point our live games will be announced."

Anyone think the Utd game on 23rd Nov is likely to be moved to the Sunday?

Everton v Liverpool and Man City v Spurs scheduled for same day but I'd imagine Scouse derby would be early KO on Sat with City v Spurs on Sunday.. leaving another game for a Super Sunday?

I'm away on the Sat so wouldn't wanna miss it!
