SWANSEA WINNING THE RACE TO LAND £8m GOMIS

Swansea City are winning the race for France star Bafetimbi Gomis as they aim to seal the deal on a new striker.

And they could land the powerful Lyon frontman for as little as £8m as they seek the frontman to bolster both Premier League and Europa League hopes next season.

Swansea have been seeking extra firepower for some time, knowing there is a need to lessen the burden on Michu’s shoulders after the Spaniard’s 22 goals last term.

And the perceived failure to land early targets in that position was cited as being one of the sparks to the tension over transfers between the club and manager Michael Laudrup and his agent recently.

After an uneasy truce was made between club and manager, there has been a renewed effort to try and nail down a striker to end frustrations and return focus to the club’s challenges ahead.

And it appears to be close to paying dividends with Swansea seen to be in the driving seat to grab Gomis.

The 27-year-old had already caught the eye with his goals for French giants Lyon, hitting 20 from 40 games last season and helping the side into third in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain and Marseilles.

Dubbed Didier Drogba-esque in his play, although not quite as explosive in his attacking nature, he remains an option for the France national side who he grabbed his last goal for in a friendly clash with Italy in November.

It has seen a number of clubs being linked with the six-footer, notably Cardiff City with manager Malky Mackay refusing to deny he had hopes of landing Gomis earlier this summer.

Gomis had stated he had been happy to stay in France and see out the remaining 12 months of his Stade der Gerland contract.

But he has now been told that his hopes of heading to the World Cup with Brazil could depend on him leaving with Lyon president Jean Michel-Aulas admitting he is ready to cash in on the former St Ettienne ace.

And with Lyon reportedly needing to sell to balance the books, it has paved the way for a deal for the Swans.

Some reports had suggested that he would cost as much as £12m, but it is understood Swansea are hopeful of doing a deal well below that figure, although nonetheless breaking the club record £5.55m shelled out to sign Pablo Hernandez last August.

Wages are not thought to be an issue and there is an eagerness to tie up the deal quickly after the player was identified by Swansea’s scouting network as fitting the profile for both budget and the team’s style.

Bringing in a striker would certainly take away some of Laudrup’s public frustration over a lack of signings and also show Swansea are ready to put the weeks of disruption behind them to press on with preparations for the new season.

With Jose Canas already signed up on a pre-contract and talks in place to do deals for Jonathan de Guzman and Espanyol defender Jordi Amat, the capture of Gomis would represent a huge boost.

Certainly, there has been an easing of the frenzied speculation over the future of Laudrup as he attempted to distance himself from his agent’s fall-out with the club as well as the immediate links with the PSG job.

And with Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, Anzhi manager Guus Hiddink and now ex-Manchester City chief Roberto Mancini edging ahead of the Dane in the perceived pecking order for the PSG job, there has been a greater sense of getting back to business at the Liberty Stadium.

Seems Liverpool are keen too, but with them having Aspas and Suarez and no European football - it seems Swansea is his preferred destination.

Not sure 100% on this.

What I've noticed is certain writers on both BBC and Walesonlinr
Have Jack bias.
You may notice that nearly all Walesonline cardiff stories
With player picture, will have a jack player on it too.

Certain stories and angles of stories just have made me question bias
The last few seasons.

This is not me being one-eyed

TBF. Gomis may want europaleague although I would more expect that
The highest bidder would win. Gomis would then do a
Few seasons to showcase and if any good -get snapped by a champions league side

hes 27, no champions league sides are going to be snapping him up in a few seasons time. Hes in his prime right now.

As for bias, they are companies based in Cardiff, most of which are Cardiff fans like Paul abondondondonddondado (sp). Wathan is the only fair minded journalist they have imo.

Wales on line are the only ones running with this (and we know how reliable they are, as all their info usually comes from club forums), no other British paper has this in their gossip column. I do think that this player will go to the highest bidder with the better wages offered.

Having said that, if he is really worth 8-12m why are a club like Lyon letting him go?

12 months to run on his contract and Lyon in financial difficulty.

I have worked with a number of jacks over the years
To know that the vast majority are bitter bastards!

My views based on observations -no jealous hatred here.

Lyon seem to have their finacial issues in hand, I have no doubt that Gomis has talent as getting 20 goals in a season is no mean feat. There has to be more to his release than just financial, Lyon finished 3rd and are in the champo league! Awkward person to manage maybe? Surely the whole situation with Laudrup will need to be sorted before you jacks secure any sort of high profile transfers!

he has 12 months to run on his contract. their financial situation isn't sorted by any means. if they keep him for this season he walks for free next season. Look at Van Persie, Arsenal were forced to sell with 12 months left on his contract at cut price.it happens everywhere, a move from the French League to the Premier League is always going to be tempting.

as for Laudrup, what is there to sort? He has said until hes blue in the face hes staying. we are now pushing on after throwing out his agent from transfer discussions who is a well know trouble maker. we have discarded the rotten apple.

Good I hope the Jacks completely overspend keeping Laudrup happy and then get relegated.

overspending means spending money you don't have. We have posted back to back 15 million profits with revenue increasing by 40% for the coming financial year.

just sayin.

Managers lie, Fergie said no to retirement only 8 weeks ago even though he made his mind up last Christmas. Roma. Fenerbache or Swansea (with naff all of a transfer budget which will be blown in one foul swoop on Gomis just to keep Laudrup and then they will give him no more budget to spend), no brainer really!

Au revoir jack boys your time is up!

Probably because you know it was pointless when Liverpool came in. Don't mention the uefa cup, Liverpool are ones of the worlds famous clubs and they will pay far higher wages then you. You won't compete with them. Jesus and you call us deluded!
