Cardiff City: McPhail set to leave, McNaughton in talks

Cardiff's City's out-of-contract midfielder Stephen McPhail, 33, is likely to leave the newly-promoted club after seven years in south Wales.
Having been dogged by illness, the ex-Republic of Ireland international has not played a league game this season.
McPhail was diagnosed with a form of lymphoma in November 2009 and then the autoimmune disease Sjogren's Syndrome.
Meanwhile, defender Kevin McNaughton, 30, has opened talks about a possible new two-year deal.
McPhail's departure and McNaughton's talks come as the Bluebirds prepare for their Premier League debut having dominated the 2012-13 Championship title race.
McNaughton, who joined from Aberdeen in July, 2006, is, like McPhail, out of contract.
However, having made only two appearances as a substitute in the FA Cup in 2012-13, McPhail will not add to 203 games he has played for Cardiff since joining from Barnsley in July, 2006.
Scot McNaughton has made 263 Bluebirds appearances since his arrival.

Good news. Not our best player but a true 100%er who loves the club and will always give his best. Really popular with fellow pros and good for team spirit even when not in squad.

That's great, bit of mutual respect between player and club, no less than he deserves!

I love Kev as a person and he is Mr Cardiff City, but he will surely never play in the Premier League? Unfortunately, he is nowhere near good enough and I thought Malky said he was going to be ruthless? I would have rathered Malky let Kev go and use his wages to bring in a better quality right back. I know the majority won't like that, but I want to see us constantly improving and progressing, not keeping hold of players who aren't capable of stepping up to the next level.

There is no room for sentiment but he's been incredibly loyal. I very much doubt he'll be anywhere near the first team but he'd be a good squad player! He plays his heart on the sleeve and he's nothing but a club legend! I waaaaant silver hair toooooo! :ayatollah:

Always been a huge fan of Kev but feel a hint of sentiment here. No doubting his commitment and witnessing his passion when he broke away from players after Charlton game and on bus with trophy on Sunday was tremendous. :ayatollah:

He is still a decent defender but can't pass, cross or shoot and is prone to injury, we need better to succeed in the Prem!

When it seemed everything about the club was going the way of modern football, it's great to see that sentiment and honour STILL have a place at our club.

Good.

He kept Man Utds new 10 million pound winger quiet a few months back. Good squad player

We wouldn't have been saying that if his curling shot dipped just under the bar instead of hitting it.

Yes we would because in general play he dominated Zaha. SuperKev is much underrated as a man marker who can do a real job on danger men.
