derby had just signed 7 midfielders in 2006 and were pushing for promotion,
he impressed at millwall on loan however suffered a serious inj resulting in lack of performances... and then his form dipped as did millwalls...

im not trying to justify he is amazing, but certainly i dont think he looks that bad and he def has bags of pace and a good touch..

The point still remains tho, irrespective of injuries, teams got him in, consistently released him fairly quickly. Injured, you'd expect would have been given time to recover. Only conclusion you can draw is either there were serious off the pitch issues or he simply wasn't good enough to get into the team - given Palace were pretty poor during his time there...

Signing Smith would be a massive punt, would be a signing completely out of step with every other Mackay signing.

Bothroyd played far more games, more regularly and more consistently at a higher level.

I didn't say it was exact, just that it reminded me of his history with the game; flung around clubs as a youngster and a move abroad where he was eventually unsettled. :ayatollah:

totally agree would be a massive punt, but at around 1.5 to 2k a week think would be a decent addition..

we have just paid 250k for an unproven 20 yr old from plymouth... surely that is also a punt.... lets be honest had any of us ever heard of him before he signed?

Could be worth brining him here for a trial first and if he impresses then sign him on a 1 year like Martin John last season and if he turns out to be crap then he can go elsewhere, nothing really lost then as there is no transfer fee and low wages.

I'd heard of Mason, from a mate in Plymouth.

I'd say of the two, there's a decent body of work behind Mason. We need strikers, young, potential, scoutable.

Smith on the other hand, has struggled at every club he's been at, aside from the greatness that is the MLS.

If our budget dictates we can take a small, limited number of punts, Mason over Smith is a no brainer.

The Man Yew footage? Pace, sure. Some cutey tricks that may not come off in competitive games. A few wild shots. Low crosses, which you'd expect to be cut out. Relied solely on his pace, knock it past full back. Again, in a competitive match, that would be dealt with.

I've just seen nothing in the footage that I can imagine Mackay would be interested in, pace aside. His history is just another nail in the coffin.

- Man U reserve team hardly competition? :? Berbatov, Giggs, Scholes, Nani, Smalling, Rafael, Evans all in that team, how the hell isn't that competition? :?

- Arsenal, Played a few Carling Cup games - Think that's called not being given much of a chance.

- Leicester loan, 17 league matches in a 7 month spell - He was in their first team when he first joined but then got injured and lost his place in the first team.

- Joined Derby permanently, Aug 06. Lasted a year, playing 15 league games, 10 as sub. Within 6 months of signing him, Derby loaned him out to Millwall. 6 league games there in 4 months. Millwall then paid 150k for him - only transfer fee he's gone for. Stayed with Millwall 18 months playing 17 league games, 8 as sub - Derby loaned him out to get him match fit, Millwall must of seen something good about him otherwise they wouldn't of re-signed him.

- Millwall themselves loaned him out for the final 4 months of his stint with them. 5 League games at Southampton in that time. Millwall then released him on a free, Smith lasting the remainder of the season - 4 months - with Southampton, 8 league games, 5 as sub - Again got injured, was loaned out to Southampton to gain match fitness, was obviously not up to match fitness that's why he only featured 8 times.

- After that, Aug 2009, taken on by Palace. Lasted six months playing few games - That's because he only had a short term contract! They only offered him a short term contract because he wasn't match fit at the time and was struggling with injuries.

- So basically, what we've got is a player at this level not good enough to cement a place with any type of regularity, who teams have got rid of very, very quickly - Basically he's been unlucky with injuries and hasn't really been given a chance to get back up to match fitness, he's now done that at the MLS and you can see that he's now found his form as shown in the video against Man Utd!

- Seriously - does anybody think Mackay would have his sights set so low? He's also set his sights 'low' on his previous signing in Joe Mason from League 2 Plymouth, there both young players with bags of potential! Worth a go on only £2,000 a week!!

Don't sign players based on what you have seen on Youtube.

The fact is that he has FAILED at every English team he has played for.

Jay left Arsenal due to breaking the rules.

Smith left Arsenal, Derby, Millwall cos he is shite.

I forgot Berbatov was marking him.

Do you *seriously* believe he'd be given that amount of room and space in a Prem game? Seriously? Again, I emphasise the seriously part. It was a freaking friendly...

- Arsenal, Played a few Carling Cup games - Think that's called not being given much of a chance.

Wenger routinely played youngsters in the Carling Cup to gain them experience. Doesn't the fact he only made a few appearances ring a bell?

- Leicester loan, 17 league matches in a 7 month spell - He was in their first team when he first joined but then got injured and lost his place in the first team.

He was dropped before being injured, from what I've heard.

- Derby loaned him out to get him match fit, Millwall must of seen something good about him otherwise they wouldn't of re-signed him.

Loaned him out to get match fit, then got rid ASAP. Millwall may have resigned him, but got rid... a pattern is emerging.

- Again got injured, was loaned out to Southampton to gain match fitness, was obviously not up to match fitness that's why he only featured 8 times.

Injured, not match fit. You do know Mackay is our manager and not Dave Jones?

After that, Aug 2009, taken on by Palace. Lasted six months playing few games - That's because he only had a short term contract! They only offered him a short term contract because he wasn't match fit at the time and was struggling with injuries.

And offered him nothing after the short term contract expired.

Face it, little to no interest at this level. You can blame injuries, but that's a copout.

- Basically he's been unlucky with injuries and hasn't really been given a chance to get back up to match fitness, he's now done that at the MLS and you can see that he's now found his form as shown in the video against Man Utd!

You'd take him on based around a video of a few - note the emphasis on the word few - highlights in a friendly match? Wow. Again, no comment on the actual highlights. You think he'd get room to knock the ball past the full back at this level? The odd trick, well, didn't work for Trundle. He's lightning quick, I'll give him that...

-He's also set his sights 'low' on his previous signing in Joe Mason from League 2 Plymouth, there both young players with bags of potential! Worth a go on only £2,000 a week!!

Joe Mason is younger, has played regularly, has shown potential to play at this level and above.

Ryan Smith has shown nothing of note to convince anyone he can do that, plus as you've stated, is a sicknote.

Bit difference.

2k? Right - you think he'll be happy with 2k, less than others with us, due to the MLS pay? Hmm, survey says no.

Mackay has his sights on better players.

Yeah, was asleep, get to work early.

Bertrand is a quality left back. Not really a priority though given we signed Taylor. Unless Taylor plays left midfield, which I believe he did for Mackay.

Think too many teams will want Bertrand. the Rodgers connection would help the Jacks. Unfortunately.

Re: Ryan Smith wants UK return - Move Malky!

I'd rather not. He hasn't got a great pedigree in the English game and he's not playing in the MLS for nothing. And judging players based on youtube appearances is a well known dodgy way of going about things.

I forgot Berbatov was marking him.

Do you *seriously* believe he'd be given that amount of room and space in a Prem game? Seriously? Again, I emphasise the seriously part. It was a freaking friendly...

Didn't say he was but the way you made it out they were playing f*cking Accrington Stanley or something! What you think teams don't try in friendlies or something do you? The whole point is to get match fit for the new season and if you don't try then you won't get your match fitness up!

Wenger routinely played youngsters in the Carling Cup to gain them experience. Doesn't the fact he only made a few appearances ring a bell?

How many Carling Cup games do you think he's going to be then  Because its not 30 odd in the Cup like in the league

He was dropped before being injured, from what I've heard.

No he wasn't! Your just lying now because your being proven wrong!

Loaned him out to get match fit, then got rid ASAP. Millwall may have resigned him, but got rid... a pattern is emerging.

They didn't get 'rid', your just trying to make it sound worse! Millwall met Derby's asking price for him, Millwall must of seen something promising about him but he still wasn't match fit.

Injured, not match fit. You do know Mackay is our manager and not Dave Jones?

That makes sense that does! Obviously, are you trying to say Dave Jones played injured players or something :?

And offered him nothing after the short term contract expired.

Face it, little to no interest at this level. You can blame injuries, but that's a copout.

He was obviously offered a short term contract because he was struggling with fitness, still couldn't get up to match fitness and wasn't really given the chance to do so! So if you've been unlucky with alot of injuries it shouldn't effect you are you trying to say  look at Owen Hargreaves.

Yes! Many managers have done it to sign players including the best Sir Alex Ferguson! Oh yeah forgot teams don't try in friendlies... well according to you they don't  This level? He's playing the level above there so obviously yes but you think 'they don't try in friendlies'  Trundle? Wtf are you on about  Trundle never had pace though, and that's a big part of todays game.

Joe Mason is younger, has played regularly, has shown potential to play at this level and above.
Ryan Smith has shown nothing of note to convince anyone he can do that, plus as you've stated, is a sicknote.

2k? Right - you think he'll be happy with 2k, less than others with us, due to the MLS pay? Hmm, survey says no.
Mackay has his sights on better players.

Joe hasn't played regularly or shown potential at Championship level. He obviously have otherwise they wouldn't of signed him or he wouldn't of been playing for Arsenal who have the best youngsters in the world. Yes, that's what he's getting now and happy with otherwise he wouldn't of agreed the contract at Kansas. Well he hasn't set his sights higher in Joe Mason, both young and promising players, be a fool not to at least give him a try.

Btw you talk bollocks!

Re: Ryan Smith wants UK return - Move Malky!

Wed Jul 13, 2011 8:15 am

And again, do you think he'd have had enough time in competitive games, you think the full backs would stand off as much as in those highlights? Did you ignore the paucity of highlights in the second half, hmm?

Oh wait, one game worth of highlights. For 2 minutes 50s. I'm sure your beloved Ferguson will be after him, he "impressed" for 2 min 50s...

30 CC games? Don't be stupid. How many did he play in his time under a pro contract with Arsenal, hmmm? Compare and contrast with other youngsters there...

I realise the point seems above your head, but the pattern is, get contract. Not match fit. Loan to get match fit. Get injured. Still not match fit. Play few games. Get released.

Dave Jones didn't play injured players. He did however bring them in. Fowler. Sinclair.

As for the contract money, MLS aren't high payers, for obvious reasons even you can grasp. The fact that was the best deal he could get would indicate a lack of interest in him...

Still, let's see where he ends up, eh?

Plenty of players go to different clubs for a trial, doesn't mean they're any good. The club is probably looking around for players, seen he's available and thought they'd give him a week there. Nothing about this bloke inspires me that he's worth signing

he looks really good! im know football rather well, but havent heard much of this bloke. could be a good addition to us.

wonder how far malkys scouts go to find talent (hopefully outside of scotland) and if theres a chance that he comes under the radar!

looks just as good as routlege and probably for a fraction of the price :ayatollah:

So he looks decent playing for Kansas in the land of the Yankee Doodlers.

Far be it for me to shit all over the first post of somebody excitedly creating a thread based around someone he believes he's spotted who could benefit us, but there are two words providing the evidence against.

Eddie Johnson.

As in, which MLS team did he play for? Which team did he look like a "star" for?

That video is against Man Utd! If that's not playing against a team of hight standard then what is!

Man Yew reserve team, in a friendly. Hardly that competitive a match, eh?

Tell you what, let's examine his history.

Arsenal? Played a few Carling Cup games, released Aug 2006.
Leicester loan, 17 league matches in a 7 month spell.
Joined Derby permanently, Aug 06. Lasted a year, playing 15 league games, 10 as sub. Within 6 months of signing him, Derby loaned him out to Millwall. 6 league games there in 4 months.
