Bluebirds step up interest in Coventry defender Richard Keogh
May 30 2012
CARDIFF CITY have stepped up their interest in Coventry’s Richard Keogh by submitting a written offer for the versatile defender’s services.
Bluebirds’ boss Malky Mackay is keen to land the 25-year-old, who can play at full-back or centre-half.
But Coventry are determined to hold on to their player of the season for the last two campaigns and two other Championship clubs have also expressed an interest.
The Sky Blues Development Director, Steve Waggott, confirmed Cardiff’s bid, but said talks were on-going to keep Keogh at the Midlands club where he still has one year on his contract .
Waggott said: “We are currently in talks with Richard Keogh about an extension to his current contract and him remaining at Coventry City.”
After their relegation to League One last season Coventry face a fight to hold onto Keogh, who was formerly Republic of Ireland Under-21 captain.
Ipswich are thought to be one of the other clubs in competition for Keogh’s signature.
Coventry would not confirm the amount bid by Cardiff, but around £800,000 is expected to be enough for a player the Sky Blues value at £1m.
An offer of £250,000 by Keogh’s former club, Bristol City, was recently rejected by Coventry and described as ‘derisory.’
Meanwhile, the Bluebirds’ hopes of landing Burnley hotshot Jay Rodriguez have all but ended.
The Clarets have accepted a £7m bid for the 22-year-old from newly-promoted Premier League outfit Southampton with only personal terms still needing to be thrashed out.
Cardiff were reportedly prepared to pay £5.5m for Rodriguez.
But another young striker Mackay has been keeping tabs on, Bjorn Sigurdarson, is said to be keen on a move to English football.
The 21-year-old Icelandic international has netted 11 goals in 13 games for Lillestrom in Norway this season
“There are a number of clubs looking at Bjorn closely and we are waiting to see what happens,” said Sigurdarson’s agent Jerry de Koning.
“I know Everton, Wolves, Reading and Cardiff have all been to watch Bjorn and there is also interest from Germany so we will see what is best for him.
“We would want a move to be done as soon as possible so that Bjorn can have pre-season with his new club and I would expect something to happen by July.
“Bjorn would like to play in England.”
Bluebirds youngster Aaron Wildig, who left the club this summer, has agreed a permanent deal with League One new boys Shrewsbury Town.
The 20-year-old made 21 appearances for Cardiff between 2009 and 2011,
His only goal for the Bluebirds came at Newcastle in a Championship clash in February 2010 when he grabbed a consolation in a 5-1 Cardiff defeat.
The Bluebirds will play Newcastle for the first time since that occasion in a high-profile pre-season friendly in the Welsh capital on Saturday, August 11, the week before their league campaign starts.
The club have announced the senior side’s summer schedule with the clash against Alan Pardew’s Magpies the pick of the bunch.
Cardiff will also travel to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, July 28, then to Cheltenham Town three days later, Oxford United on Saturday, August 4 and then to Bournemouth three days after that.
Before that the Bluebirds will head to a training camp in Switzerland between July 15 and 22.
No games have been arranged, but an open training session will be held for supporters who wish to travel.
But it will be the arrival of Newcastle which will excite most Cardiff supporters.
Under Pardew the Tynesiders confounded all expectations last season by finishing fifth in the Premier League, grabbing themselves a Europa League place in the process.
Mackay said the clash was the perfect preparation for his side’s next campaign.
“We’re delighted that we’ve got Newcastle coming in August,” said Mackay.
“It’s the sort of game, just before the start of the new season, that will see us hit the ground running. Newcastle will
