Cardiff City boss Russell Slade will not be in charge of the first team next season

Cardiff City will appoint a new head coach to run the first team next season after it was revealed Russell Slade will be moved to a new head of football role.

The major breaking news means Slade will take charge of the Cardiff City team for the final time against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The decision comes following talks between the manager and owner Vincent Tan on Friday, which were followed by a board meeting between the club's directors.

A statement from Vincent Tan said: "I'd like to thank Russell for his efforts since his appointment here in October 2014.

"Since then, we have seen stabilisation and progression both on and off the field. Crucially, he is a man who I have been able to trust.

"Russell's contribution has been significant, and I am pleased he has accepted this new position to stay at the football club.

"He will help us as we look towards the future and begin shaping our squad for the new season.

"I also feel that he can help us create additional synergy between Cardiff City and our sister clubs."

Slade added: "I'd like to express my sincere thanks to Tan Sri Vincent Tan for giving me the opportunity to join this football club back in 2014. I feel we have made progress on and off the field during this time, achieving stability and giving the club solid ground on which to move forward.

"I'm therefore very pleased to accept the new position of head of football, which allows me to play my part in our future."

A very sensible move. This may be a way of making room for Bellamy, of course.

He's done well for the club so not surprised he's been given a role quite surprised though he accepted it as I thought he'd still want to manage.

Not his biggest fan but in all fairness he has had to a difficult job while shipping out a lot of dead wood. A good move in all honesty and somebody between new manager and Vinnie boy

Carl, Russell Slade did do a good job in difficult circumstances and we should (I think most do) appreciate the job he has done in the main

This appointment is a "happy medium" for me and I hope it works, all depending on who the new First Team Coach is

Will it be Trollope? Personally, I hope not, as I see him and Young (by default) as part of the issue during our poor run-in

Time will tell, but I sincerely hope that Vincent Tan and the Board are brave and go for something a little different

Craig Bellamy in charge of the First Team would be my preference and Russell just might be the right man to have a s a link between him and the man at the top!

I think its setting up for Bellamy to become head coach, with Russell Slade above him to assist in recruitment, etc. And possibly keeping Trollope to the side to assist with management. And that's before including the rest of support Bellamy would have from around the football world such as Dutch Ray!

I think this is a great move by the club. Keeps slade who obviously tan trusts and i can understand why after last two managers while gets a New more progressive Head coach in on sidelines. Perfect Job for slade imo who has often said he is not a coach. I believe slade deserves this Job as although i would prefer a New Head coach would have been harsh on slade as done ok in tough times

I agree with this as a way of standing by a man who has worked hard for the club.

However, it's disappointing that his role will include scouting (and by inference, recruitment). That has not been his strong suit. I totally agree that he will be an excellent line of communication with Tan!!! A move of genius there in my view.

That is taking the easy way out.

He should have been removed from anything to do with football.

I am staggered, bewildered and baffled by this nonsensical decision.

Shame he has to stay, a cost we could do without.

what baffles me a bit is to make a man who doesn't have a great understanding of recruiting and player development head of football (lack of bringing young players such as o'sullivan threw for example). two things that also worry me is 1. we wil not be getting Warnock who for me near enough guarantees promotion and 2. will bellamy take telling about transfers and recruitment when he has prob forgot more than russ knows about the beautiful game.. also is this why Immers is now saying he doesn't know where his future lies as maybe the new guy they have lined up doesn't fancy him???

At least this is a move in the right direction,Head of football i dont get that the fans should be the head of football with our comments..

I think this is good move by the club. Slade has done a good job in bringing the finances back to a manageable level. He may not the best tactically but overall I think he has done ok. I would think the new role of head coach is set up very nicely for either Bellamy or Trollope now. A new manager/head coach will give this squad of players a real lift for the beginning of next season. A young hungry manager with fresh ideas is just what we need and having the added advantage of someone like Slade in the background can only be a positive. The club seems to be in much healthier position now and it's starting to be run like a proper football club. Retaining the services of Slade to carry on in a supporting role makes a lot of sense. Slade is level headed and a safe pair of hands to help and assist the new manager.

Well done to Slade for cutting the wage bill and stabilizing the club and giving the new manager a foundation to build on and deserves better than this role should get an oppurtunity at another club.

According to radio Wales it's not director of football but a kind of liason person for all aspects of football matters including under 21st ect ,backroom staff staying! bellers is not in running but a young up coming manager to be looked for. Also recruitment committee is staying in place!

I agree about the buffer between management and the owner, but i believe there wont be any applicants needed to fill the post because they probably have already filled that position. Its Jose im telling you!
