Investing?

Mon Nov 11, 2013 12:12 am

hey guys, im looking for some advice or anything on investing. im only 22, but when i was in college, a tutor told us she made a killing from investing which funded her mothers cancer treatments, and then her own before she sadly passed away. she told us that she made enough money to retire for life, but choose to work as a tutor. now im thinking, with job oppounities limited, that maybe i could make a little cash on investments, but i have no idea what to do, where to begin. just looking for some advice :ayatollah:

most saving accounts are shit atmo, what id do is get your £500 and stick it in premium bonds, you never know you might get lucky and win something and keep it there until the interest rate increases to a rate your happy to utilise.

You can pick up a leaflet at the post office it'll tell you everything.it's like a lottery draw once a month but you don't lose any money.you'll get 500 chances to win every month until you want your money back.

Its a pitty you missed the Royal Mail sell off because that was the best way to make a quick buck with shares for many, many years (please note that I did advise people to take the punt at the time).

However realistically shares is a gamble because it does give you an interest in industries you wouldn't have a clue about.

I do apologise but with shares the bottom line is £500 is pennies so only risk it if you can afford to lose it or at least be without it for a minimum of 12 months.

I've already invested in Falklands Oil and Gas and 'hope' that 2014 will show progress in the wells they are digging. At 28.5p per share at the moment its worth the risk and more information can be found here: http://www.lse.co.uk/SharePrice.asp?shareprice=FOGL

For a more less risky punt but you won't get many shares for £500 the RBS share price has dropped recently so could be a good time to buy and I can see the Government selling apart of that bank before the 2015 election. More information on them can be seen on here: http://www.lse.co.uk/SharePrice.asp?sha ... ROYAL_BANK SCOT

your 500 will be safe,if you win they'll let you know and you can check the numbers online.you don't have to put any more money in.i think the minimum you can put in is £100 and the maximum is £20,000.
and there's one draw a month.

Unless you are very lucky you don't get money for nothing.

If investing was a sure method of making money we would all do it. So be aware that if you invest in something then you could lose your stake.

If you do not know what premium bonds are then I am very worried that you have very little knowledge of financial investments and that whatever you do is the equivalent to looking at the runners and riders in a newspaper and betting your £500 on a horse. You might win but the chances are that you will lose.

You could invest your money in shares, poker games, online betting etc. But if you want to have a good chance of making money you need to spend a lot of time researching your potential investment.

Some people invested in companies such as Google and Microsoft 20 years or more ago and have seen their investments grow to a hundred or thousand times the original value. But the same people probably also invested similar sums in other high tech companies that went bust.

Try shadow investing. Choose 5 companies to invest in and record the share prices today. Record their share prices every Monday for the next six months. Assume that you had invested £100 in each company and calculate the value of your investments each Monday. At the end of six months assess what you have learnt. Only then should you decide how to invest your £500.

I couldn't agree more with the last poster.

It think its really worrying that people don't know what premium bonds are or even how to buy shares. Yes we all have to learn somewhere and part of that learning is knowing that everything carries a risk but things like this should be taught at school if the country wants more entrepreneurs.

I remember in school we had a business studies teacher whos never been in business herself and I'm sure that if everything in business was as easy as reading a few text books then we would all be at it!!!!

Its better odds to win national lottery than premium bonds i remember reading somewhere. You need more than £500 to get regular returns. I used to have around 18k of premium bonds, used to win £50 - £100 every draw. But there is always that chance you could win 100k or even 1million. I've only had 1k of premium bonds for about 1 year now and only won £25 once, in the last draw funny enough.

well ive done the stocks before when i was about your age in fact. Its generally linked to the FT index which is really high at the moment so dont invest now because when it drops, which it inevitably will, you will lose half your investment. The less risky stuff gives little return like bonds.
I'd save some cash, wait for the stock market to fall to say 4000, chuck in as much as you can and hopefully it will slowly double.
Ive done this a few times now, 20k once turned into 40k, 50 into 100 etc.. might take a year or 2 but you can make big bucks. Just remember to withdraw it in time which i didnt once and it went back down to same as i invested. 2 years wasted.
make sure you can withdraw it all with no hidden costs too. good luck.
